Uttarakhand government plans GPS mapping of 100 trekking routes in the state to help ensure the safety of trekkers and boost adventure tourism. The motive behind this initiative is to save the trekkers from getting lost in mountainous regions as well as to validate and strengthen the emergency response mechanisms at remote locations.

Uttarakhand, the most sought-after trekking destination in India, is visited by thousands of adventure seekers every year. The country is blessed with lots of high-altitude meadows, thick forests, glaciers and Himalayan peaks; hence it has a wide number of trekking trails. But harsh weather, low visibility and the inaccessibility of a number of trekking routes had caused many trekkers to get lost.

To address these concerns, authorities will conduct detailed GPS mapping of selected trekking trails. The digital mapping process will record accurate route coordinates and identify key points such as campsites, resting areas, water sources, emergency shelters, and difficult sections of the trek. This information will help trekkers navigate safely and make informed decisions while exploring the mountains.

Officials are confident that the GPS mapping of routes will prove a great aid for search and rescue operations. Should an incident arise, rescue parties will have a better ability to locate the lost or stranded trekkers. The precise routes should therefore lead to decreased response times and increased levels of safety for the area.

This new initiative is also said to promote the growing adventure tourism market within the state. It is hoped that by making trekking safe and clearly defined, more local and foreign tourists will be encouraged to travel and hike within Uttarakhand. Tourism analysts believe this project to be a significant step towards a modern trekking infrastructure and a better experience for tourists.

The introduction of GPS trekking routes is part of the wider aim to regularize and improve the activity within the state. Other possible safety measures are also being considered, such as compulsory registration of treks, provision of qualified guides, better communication equipment and GPS devices for trekkers.

With more people choosing the adventure tourism route, the security and safety of trekkers have become a paramount concern for state governments. With the introduction of 100 GPS-mapped treks, trekkers should feel more assured while they explore the Himalayas, thus paving the way for a safer and more organized trekking culture in Uttarakhand.

It is believed that this project will be conducted in phases. This will first cover some of the state’s most utilized trails.
