The weather scenario in Uttarakhand is getting dynamic as the State is nearing the onset of the Southwest monsoon. The weather department has forecast heavy rains in some parts of the state, with increased rainfall activity in all areas. The “monsoon countdown” has started off, which means relief from the high temperatures, but high risks related to the weather in the hills.
Weather forecasts indicate that the winds are moistening and the weather is becoming favourable, resulting in the formation of clouds and precipitation. Light to moderate rainfall is likely in several districts of Uttarakhand, with a possibility of heavy downpour with thunderstorms and gale force winds in some.
Hilly areas are likely to receive heavier rain in such areas because of geographical conditions. Heavy rains are likely during this period in the following areas—Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar, Nainital, Dehradun and Tehri Garhwal.
Uttarakhand is heavily reliant on seasonal rainfall for agriculture, water resources and livelihoods and the onset of monsoon is therefore deemed significant for the state. The farmers are eagerly anticipating the monsoon rains, as it replenishes soil moisture and allow for farming activities to proceed.
But heavy rain in the hills also poses some problems. Ongoing rain may lead to landslides, blockage of roads, flash floods and transportation disruptions in mountainous areas. Residents in at-risk areas have been urged to stay vigilant and alert to weather conditions.
The tourists in Uttarakhand have also been cautioned to take extra care, particularly while moving along the hilly route, trekking areas and areas at the banks of rivers or streams during these days. Weather conditions in the mountains change quickly, and there can be heavy rain at short notice that may impact travel plans.
The administration and disaster management team are keeping an eye on the situation and are making preparations for any possible disaster that might occur during the monsoon season. Local authorities should maintain close surveillance of sensitive areas and ensure rapid response systems are in place.
The weather department has called on the public to keep abreast of official forecasts and refrain from unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall. Water-logged and landslide-prone areas are also requested to take precautions.
The monsoon is gradually revving up, and Uttarakhand is in for a big weather change in the next few days. The rains will be welcome, but preparedness and caution will have to be emphasized to address challenges that may arise during the rainy season.
