The unavailability of petrol and diesel has suddenly affected normal life in Ranchi, as some of the fuel stations throughout the city have run dry and some have put out of stock signs. This sudden scenario caused panic among the locals, and long queues formed at the open petrol pumps as people scrambled to get fuel.
The commuters, office goers and transport operators were some of the worst hit as most of them had to spend hours filling their cars. Traffic congestion was reported in various sections of the city around the fuel stations because of the increased demand. There were also problems with public transport services and goods carriers, which cast doubts upon possible interference with everyday life and supply chains.
As per early reports, the shortage seems to be caused by supply disruption and not the total absence of fuel supply in the area. The time lag in transporting fuel tankers and logistical problems are suspected to have influenced the prompt refilling of petrol supplies. But the panic buying made the situation worse because people quickly learned about the shortage among the residents.
Stocks were depleted earlier than normal because of the abrupt rise in demand, according to fuel station operators. Most pumps, which normally have adequate reserves, failed to cope with the pressure. This made the out-of-stock signs a frequent occurrence in various parts of the city.
The government has intervened to gauge the situation and is working with the oil companies to resume normal supply within the shortest time possible. Authorities have assured citizens that the lack is momentary and that solutions are being sought to make sure fuel is delivered to all the affected stations. They have also encouraged people against panicking and not store fuel that they do not need, as this would only exacerbate the crisis.
Specialists mention that these cases usually happen when the disruptions in the supply chain are accompanied by increased public anxiety. Any delay in fuel supply will cause shortages in many areas in case of a sudden spurt in demand.
In the meantime, residents still must deal with a state of uncertainty, which inconveniences them. Others have opted to use social media to provide updates on petrol stations across various regions of the city to enable others to find working petrol stations.
The administration will be keen to follow the situation in the coming few days. Normalcy is bound to come in the near future as supply lines are being restored. So far, authorities are working on crowd control, equal rationing of fuel, and avoiding further panic among the citizens.
