A great change in climatic conditions has been an eye-opener to Jharkhand as the state enjoys relief after the prevailing heatwave. An alert has been issued by the India Meteorological Department of thunderstorms, rainfall and gusty winds within various districts, including Ranchi, which marks the beginning of pre-monsoon activity.

Jharkhand has been struggling with the temperatures over the last few days, with temperatures in most parts exceeding 40 °C. The severe heatwave situation had upset the normal way of life, caused health hazards, and strained the power and water supply in the area. But the recent prediction is different, and this gives hope to the people.

The officials of IMD are of the opinion that a developing weather system is set to cause thunderstorms with moderate rainfall of 30 to 60 km/h and strong winds with a speed of between 30 and 60 km/h. The department has put yellow and orange alerts in various districts due to lightning strikes and sudden change of weather. Other regions that are likely to be similar in conditions within the next 24 to 48 hours include Bokaro, Dhanbad, Hazaribagh and Deoghar.

According to Meteorologists, this weather phenomenon is common to pre-monsoon weather, commonly known as Nor’westers in eastern India. These storms are characterized by their abrupt occurrence and severity, which are accompanied by drastic changes in temperature, as well as a lot of rain and strong winds. Consequently, the temperatures in Jharkhand will decrease by 3-5 degrees Celsius, which will slightly alleviate the heat waves.

The rains are a positive aspect; however, the government has reminded its citizens to be vigilant. Lightning and thunderstorms are very hazardous, especially in the open fields and in rural areas. It has been recommended that people should remain indoors when the weather is unfavourable, not seek shelter under trees, and leave their electronic appliances plugged off during lightning events.

Local governments are also on watch to keep track of the situation so that they can respond to any emergency due to strong winds or lightning strikes. Farmers, especially, have been reminded to ensure that they take all the necessary measures to safeguard crops and livestock.

To conclude, the change in weather is a relief since it may cause the heat to be more bearable; however, it also presents new challenges. The next few days are predicted to be unpredictable, and people are advised to keep abreast of the official weather advisories and be cautious when there is storm activity.
