With the summer season bringing with it the increasing pressure on power supply, coupled with increasing demand for energy, the Uttarakhand government has announced a series of measures to save energy and reduce fuel use in government departments.

According to the new guidelines given by the government headed by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, an air conditioner will not be used in any air conditioner-related office except in special cases. In addition, government officials have been directed to implement carpooling systems for officials’ travel to reduce fuel usage and avoid unnecessary costs.

The transfer occurs as a result of power demand growth in various regions of the state, as a result of the current heat wave and greater consumption of cooling appliances. The government should be at the forefront in encouraging energy conservation and serve as an example to the citizens, officials believe.

The measures are being taken as part of a wider plan to better utilize the state’s energy resources during times of peak demand, government sources said. Other measures that have been stressed include the responsible use of electricity in public offices – lights, fans and other electric appliances are turned off when not in use.

This promotion of carpooling is anticipated to save fuel, decrease emissions and congestion. Departments have been advised to coordinate official travel plans so that multiple officers can share transportation, if possible.

Energy conservation efforts could alleviate strain on the power grid, especially during the peak heat of summer, energy experts say. Different states have tried a similar strategy in the past to solve temporary power shortages and to promote responsible energy use.

The Dhami government has announced that the goal of the measure is not just to address the immediate challenge of the increased demand for energy, but also to promote energy efficiency in government institutions. Departments will be encouraged to find other ways to save energy, and compliance with the new guidelines will be monitored, officials have said.

The government’s latest project underscores the importance of sustainable resource management as demand for electricity grows in Uttarakhand with the introduction of urbanization, tourism, and seasonal demand. The impact of these measures on the load on the state’s power plant system will not be known until they have been implemented, but they show a clear effort to balance the load in the system by administrative changes and conservation measures.
