Severe weather was experienced in several districts of Gujarat following a mini cyclone-like storm that had strong winds and torrential rain, affecting virtually the entire state and causing significant disruption to normal life. Many of the trees were blown over, power lines were damaged, and the loss of electricity in many places lasted several hours.
As per the local authorities, robust and strong wind gusts and heavy rains were observed across various districts of Saurashtra, Kutch, North Gujarat and Central Gujarat. As the storm rolled through, residents reported very heavy rainfall, low visibility conditions and waterlogging in low-lying areas.
Strong winds toppled many trees and electricity poles, causing disruptions in roadways and transport services. The teams of municipal workers who were deployed started removing fallen trees and debris from major roads to restore traffic flow. Some hoarding, temporary buildings and tin sheds were also damaged, in a few places, by the strength of the winds.
The major effect of the storm was on the power grid. Power lines were cut by trees and branches that fell on transmission lines, causing electricity outages in many urban and rural areas. The utilities had emergency crews dispatched to repair damaged utilities and restore power as soon as possible.
The weather experts said the sudden change in the weather was due to some atmospheric disturbances along with seasonal weather patterns. Thunderstorms and heavy downpours were observed in some districts due to high temperatures and favourable weather conditions in the state. Officials said the phenomenon was like a mini cyclone, as it had strong winds and caused widespread damage, but not an actual cyclone.
The heavy rains have also left farmers worried, as it has been out of season. Agricultural areas reported potential damage to standing crops and horticultural produce, threatening yields should bad weather persist. Officials will make damage assessments to ascertain the level of losses in the regions affected.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued a weather alert for some parts of Gujarat, stating that the risks of further thunderstorms, lightning and strong wind are present in the next few days. Advice has been given to residents to stay indoors during extreme weather, not to seek shelter under trees and to obey local officials’ orders.
Government agencies are keeping a close watch on the situation as restoration works continue, with a focus on preparedness to deal with emergencies and mitigate any additional impacts from weather conditions. The storm is a warning of the unpredictable nature of weather changes and the need for preparation before extreme weather events.
