In order to transform the face of school education, Composite Skill Labs are now compulsory in all the affiliated schools, including in Jharkhand, by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The program will educate students in the relevant, technology-centred skills and introduce them to new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), coding, and computational thinking.
In the new mandate, the schools will be expected to have special skill laboratories where students will have the opportunity to get practical training in addition to classroom education. These labs will be looked upon as innovation spaces, where students will be able to acquire problem-solving skills, technical expertise and industry-oriented skills at a very young age.
Based on the guidelines, schools will have to install one Composite Skill Lab with an appropriate infrastructure or establish separate laboratories in accordance with various groups of students. The labs will target students of middle and secondary classes to learn skills, which will be integrated with the overall objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
One of the main attractions of the initiative is the introduction of Artificial Intelligence to the learning process at the school level. Students will get familiar with AI notions, digital tools, automation, and coding, which will allow them to comprehend technologies that will become an even larger part of the future workforce. Along with AI, schools can also provide education in robotics, entrepreneurship, and vocational education based on the available resources.
The move has been termed by education experts as a significant change towards a shift in rote learning to experiential education. Through the adoption of modern technologies into the curriculum, CBSE strives to prepare students to be future-ready and enhance their readiness to undertake further education and career opportunities that keep changing.
In the case of Jharkhand, the mandate will enhance access to the advanced learning tools and provide students with the opportunity to explore emerging technologies at the school level. It can also be used to fill the gap between traditional education and industry needs, particularly in an increasingly digitized economy.
Schools have been provided with a time frame to meet the new standards, and schools are supposed to start modernizing facilities and training employees to facilitate the implementation. The program is also likely to affect the schools to adopt new methods of teaching and promote the development of skills other than academic.
India: The implementation of Compulsory Composite Skills Labs is a considerable change in the education sector. As AI and more practical learning are incorporated into the general education of schools nationwide, students in Jharkhand and across the country could experience a more dynamic and hands-on approach to learning that would be more aligned with the future.
