Snow-covered village and hills in Uttarakhand with text “Weather Alert: Hail, Snow Till May 5”

The state of Uttarakhand is experiencing a radical change in weather with hailstorms beating the plains and higher altitudes getting fresh snowfall, which makes the authorities issue an alert throughout the state until May 5. The abrupt shift has led to relief due to the increase in temperature, but has also led to concerns of safety and travel difficulties, in addition to damage to crops.

The India Meteorological Department indicated that the weather across North India, including Uttarakhand, is affected by an active western disturbance. This system is triggering heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and hail in low-lying regions like Dehradun and Haridwar, and light to moderate snowfall in the hills, like Chamoli, Uttarkashi and Pithoragarh.

Experts have raised a weather alert and advised the citizens to be on guard since the weather can be dangerous. In a few districts, thunderstorms with strong winds and lightning are probable, which will enhance the probability of accidents and property damage. The constant rainfall in hilly areas can cause land slipping and blockage of roads, especially along major roads that serve isolated communities.

Of great concern is the effect on agriculture as well. Farmers have already suffered due to hailstorms in the plains, which have already damaged standing crops, particularly wheat and seasonal fruits, at a time when they were in a very crucial harvesting season. The situation is under strict observation by authorities, and farmers are encouraged to exercise the necessary precautions in order to reduce losses.

Pilgrims and tourists visiting high-altitude areas have been encouraged to keep abreast of weather forecasts. The mountainous routes and Char Dham routes can be closed temporarily because of snow or debris, and slippery roads are also dangerous to the commuters.

At the same time, both disaster management teams and local administrations have been put on alert to be able to react swiftly to any emergencies. There are efforts to guarantee clearance in the roads, to restore power in the affected regions, and to keep communication networks.

Although the rainy and snowy weather has been alleviating the heat experienced at the beginning of the summer season, scientists are warning that such a sudden change in weather is normal in the season transition and can be unpredictable.

The residents are recommended not to travel unnecessarily, to remain inside during thunderstorms, and to adhere to the advice of the authorities. As the alert has been extended up to May 5, the authorities remain on high alert to keep the people safe all around the state.
