Rare May Snowfall Blankets Yamunotri and Gangotri, Surprises Pilgrims

Snow-covered landscape in Yamunotri and Gangotri after rare May snowfall, with mountains, houses, and cloudy skies.

In another peculiar weather phenomenon, new snowfall was reported in the high altitude areas of Yamunotri and Gangotri late at night, and this was the first time a fresh snowfall would be reported in the areas of Yamunotri and Gangotri in May this year. Both the locals and pilgrims have been taken by surprise by the snowfall, as snowfall in these regions of Uttarakhand is usually limited to the winter season.

According to the local authorities, the upper parts of the Uttarkashi district witnessed a sharp change in temperature as an active western disturbance took place. Whereas it was reported that heavy snowfall had been experienced in the higher altitudes near the shrines, the lower areas experienced rainfall with cold winds. The change in weather caused the winter-like weather even though the summer season had begun.

This snowfall is of exceptional interest since it coincided with the beginning of the Char Dham Yatra that unites thousands of devotees annually. Pilgrims who visited Yamunotri and Gangotri had certain issues, where there were slippery roads and poor visibility. The government has advised travellers to be careful and keep an eye on the weather warnings before undertaking the trip.

Teams of local administration have been deployed to check the roads and guarantee the security of visitors. Though no major disruptions have been reported yet, authorities are on guard in case of a landslide or temporary road blockage, which are common during sudden weather changes in mountainous areas.

Interestingly, although the snow has been a problem for tourism and pilgrimage activities, it has also relieved the local farmers. The snow and rain moisture is likely to be beneficial to crops and enhance soil conditions in the area.

According to weather experts, such rare occurrences of off-season snowfalls, though few, are not totally unprecedented. But the growing frequency of unpredictable weather patterns is raising questions about climate variability in the Himalayan belt.

The weather department in the next few days has predicted a gradual change in the weather, and temperatures are predicted to increase, and precipitation is expected to be reduced. In the meantime, the government is still encouraging pilgrims and tourists to be on the alert.

The unusual May snowfall reminds us of the unpredictable nature of the Himalayas, where the weather conditions can change very fast, affecting not only the travelling, but also the daily life in the area.
