The State government of Gujarat is planning to launch a huge religious and heritage development project with the proposal of constructing a heritage corridor of Jagannath at Ahmedabad, following the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor in Varanasi. The ambitious project is an attempt to renovate 35 temples around the famous Jagannath Temple and make the surrounding places into a world-class spiritual and cultural hub.
The state government has provided an initial budget of ₹20 crore, reports said, for the initial development phase of the project. The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is likely to be responsible for executing the corridor project that aims to enhance the infrastructure, beautify the surroundings of the temples, and provide better facilities to devotees and tourists.
The Jagannath Temple in Ahmedabad is one of the most significant religious temples in Gujarat and is also famous for its annual Rath Yatra, which draws lakhs of devotees to the temple each year. The officials think that the new route for the pilgrimage will markedly enhance the pilgrimage experience by providing improved connectivity between the nearby temples and providing well-organized routes for pilgrims.
According to the project, it is planning to renovate and restore 35 ancient temples that are situated around the Jagannath Temple precinct. Also proposed for the redevelopment plan are heritage walkways, temple plazas, landscaping, lighting, public facilities and traffic management. Authorities are also thinking about setting up cultural heritage interpretation centres to highlight the spiritual heritage and architecture of the region.
The project is inspired by the successful transformation of the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor in Uttar Pradesh, where temple access was enhanced and modernized while retaining the religious and historical value. Now Gujarat’s government wants to infuse in Ahmedabad the same mix of spirituality, tourism and heritage restorations.
The corridor project is expected to give a significant impetus to religious tourism in the state, according to experts. The development of infrastructure and better facilities will bring more tourists within and outside the country and will, in turn, boost the local businesses and employment opportunities in the area.
The redevelopment project also presents an opportunity to ensure that Gujarat’s cultural and religious heritage remains alive for future generations. The aim of the restoration of the old temples and the modernization of the area is to establish a hub of spirituality without losing the traditional character of the historic area of Jagannath Temple.
The funds for the development of the Jagannath Heritage Corridor have been sanctioned, and preparations are underway for the project to be one of the most landmark religious tourism projects of Gujarat in the years to come.
