Google Invites Bihar to Set Up Global Capability Centre

A Google team recently met Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary to explore the possibility of setting up a Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Bihar, which could help expand its vision of becoming a hub for technology and innovation. The meeting is seen as being a positive move towards major investments in the information technology industry and high-skilled jobs.

In the interaction, the representatives from Google spoke about the rapidly expanding digital ecosystem in Bihar, its infrastructure and the availability of a skilled workforce in the state. The firm asked the government to consider establishing a Global Capability Centre, a specialized unit to provide technology, research and other business and innovation-related services to multinational companies.

The Global Capability Centres have helped India’s technology growth immensely. These centres are often employed by large multinational companies for managing software development activities, AI initiatives, data analysis, customer support, cybersecurity operations, and more. The majority of the GCCs are focused on existing technology hubs like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Gurugram and Noida.

The talks were around Bihar’s possibilities to become a new hub for technology investments. State government officials noted that development is continuing to build infrastructure, increase digital connectivity, and establish a business-friendly climate that can foster foreign companies’ development interest. The government has been pushing sectors like IT, electronics, startups, innovation-driven industries, etc. The government has been actively promoting investments in these sectors.

Experts believe that the establishment of a GCC in Bihar could have far-reaching economic benefits. This would create thousands of jobs, foster local business and cut migration of skilled workers to other states. It could also boost demand for modern office spaces, training institutions, and supporting services.

The meeting takes place amid a race among several states to draw investments in the technology industry from around the world. Competition in established IT hubs, coupled with high cost, has created an attraction to emerging locations that provide a strong pool of skilled workers and growth opportunities.

There has been no formal announcement yet about the Google facility in Bihar, but the talks have created a positive outlook among industry stakeholders and policymakers. The officials stated that the meeting was a positive development as it signifies that the world is taking note of Bihar’s potential as a place for innovation and digital services.

For now, the proposal remains at an exploratory stage. However, if it progresses further, it could mark a significant milestone in Bihar’s efforts to position itself on India’s technology and investment map.
