The Uttarakhand government has given a green light to the proposal to introduce 137 electric buses in the cities of Dehradun and Haridwar in a move that will enhance transport in cities and cut down pollution. The move will bolster the public transport in the two key cities that have high commuter and tourist traffic throughout the year.
The officials say that 100 electric buses will be used in the capital of the state, Dehradun, and 37 in Haridwar, one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in India. The government has already approved the project financially, and planning on how the plan will be implemented is likely to take place shortly.
The electric buses will probably enter the market through the PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme of the central government, which promotes the implementation of eco-friendly means of transport in the cities in India. The idea of the scheme is to decrease the reliance on diesel buses and advance the clean mobility solutions in cities.
The officials asserted that the development of supporting infrastructure will also comprise the project. This involves bus depots, charging stations and maintenance facilities that are needed to run the electric buses without any difficulties. The authorities are at the moment trying to find appropriate sites for such facilities in both cities.
The electric bus will lead to a number of advantages. Electric buses have zero tailpipe emissions, unlike traditional diesel buses, a fact that contributes to the reduction of air pollution. They are also less noisy, consume less power and are therefore more sustainable as a mode of transport in urban areas.
In the cities of India, such as Dehradun, where the issues of traffic jams and pollution have been increasing, the appearance of electric buses will allow improving the overall commuting experience. Likewise, millions of people visit Haridwar annually during pilgrimages and religious festivals in particular. A better transit System will aid in controlling huge masses of people and enable the movement of people, both locals and tourists.
It is also in line with the larger Indian initiative of electric mobility and sustainable transportation. A number of Indian cities have already initiated the use of electric buses in the urban transport network, and Uttarakhand is following the same path.
The electric buses will be beneficial to the residents of Dehradun and Haridwar, as, when functional, they will offer cleaner, safer, and more comfortable transportation to the people. According to the officials, the project will be significant in changing the state transport system to a more modernized one and aid the efforts in conserving the environment.
The schedule of these buses will be influenced by the completion of the infrastructure and procurements, but with this new fleet, the authorities believe that the new buses will be in service to the commuters soon.
