The Home Department has initiated the installation of more than 9,000 high-definition CCTV cameras, marking one of the largest prison monitoring upgrades in recent years. Once fully operational, officials believe this extensive surveillance network will drastically curb illegal activities inside prisons and enhance overall administration.
According to state authorities, the project aims to modernize prison security by adopting international standards of monitoring and control. Bihar has faced challenges in the past with incidents involving smuggling of mobile phones, drugs, and prohibited items into jails. Occasional reports of inmate violence and clashes have also highlighted the need for a more robust security mechanism. The installation process has already begun in several central and district jails.
