The Bihar government has made a major administrative decision by changing the names of two big institutions in the state capital by taking out the name of Sanjay Gandhi in their titles. It was passed in a cabinet meeting that was presided over by the Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary.
In the new modifications, the famous Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park will officially be renamed to Patna Zoo. The zoo is one of the most significant tourist attractions in the state of Bihar, and it was founded in 1973; it was commonly known by the locals as Patna Zoo. According to the authorities, the renaming aligns the official name with everyday usage by the people, and it becomes more convenient to the visitors and administration.
On the same note, the Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Dairy Technology has changed its name to the Bihar State Institute of Dairy Technology. The institute is a key educational and training institution in dairy science, which has a considerable contribution to benefiting the dairy industry and agricultural economy of the state.
The decision, according to government sources, is a part of a larger project of simplifying the naming of government institutions and making them more region-specific. The government is eliminating the names of political leaders of the past in order to establish neutral and locally appropriate institutional branding.
The action has received mixed reactions both politically and in the general populace. The advocates claim that streamlining names makes them much clearer and more representative of who the state is. They also note that Patna Zoo is already in common use, and formalizing it will not cause confusion.
Conversely, critics have raised the question of whether there is any need at all to rename established institutions, indicating that it could have political overtones. They feel that those names that have been associated with historical figures are a heritage of the country, and they ought to be maintained.
The authorities, however, insist that the move is administrative in nature and aimed at enhancing people’s communication and institutional identity. They further mentioned that the cabinet meeting had deliberated on a number of other development-related proposals, but these are yet to be fully revealed.
Public renaming of institutions has been a common practice in different states in India and has mostly been a reflection of changes in governance priorities and sentiment. The Bihar government has followed that trend with this decision, which will mean that it aims to redesign institutional identities, with an emphasis on administrative efficiency.
