The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is about to embark on a massive urban infrastructure initiative to modernize over 50 kilometres of key roads and precincts in Ahmedabad’s urban fabric into smart, green and people-friendly corridors. Helmet circle, CG Road and roads connecting with the fast-developing area of Thaltej are some of the challenging areas in this ambitious redevelopment.
The project aims to enhance the overall transportation infrastructure and experience for pedestrians, cyclists, commuters, and the local community in Ahmedabad, while also supporting the development of the city’s economy and sustainability. The project is part of the city’s overall smart urban development plan that aims for sustainable development, traffic management, and enhanced public spaces.
The new “model roads” will be equipped with all contemporary urban planning elements, including widened footpaths, separate bicycle lanes, intelligent street lighting, organized parking systems, green areas with greenery and improved drainage systems. The city will also be rolling out underground utilities that will minimize clutter on the road and enhance the aesthetic of the city.
The project is expected to bring a significant transformation to one of the busiest commercial hubs of Ahmedabad, CG Road. The redevelopment will aim to improve the accessibility and pedestrian friendliness of this road, reduce congestion and repurpose the road as a space for increased use. The redevelopment will feature shopping and office developments, with a high amount of road movement.
Helmet Circle and the adjacent areas will also experience new road layouts and public areas to enhance connectivity and facilitate more efficient traffic flow. The Thaltej region is another area of concern that has undergone rapid urban growth in recent years, owing to the growth of residential and commercial buildings, and has been added as a priority area for upgrading infrastructure.
The project will not just aim to improve vehicle flow, but will also ensure safer and more comfortable areas for pedestrians and cyclists, officials said. Accessibility for senior citizens and differently abled people will be given special consideration.
The green road initiative is also believed to play a role in environmental sustainability by increasing the number of trees and promoting non-motorized transportation (walking and cycling). The urban planners think that such developments can help to reduce pollution and make the city a better place to live in.
The proposed redevelopment has been welcomed by residents and business owners in the area, who hope that it will help to improve the urban landscape of Ahmedabad and alleviate traffic congestion. The experts state that the project can be a role model for other smart road development projects in different cities of India.
Based on detailed planning and project approvals, the project is anticipated to be undertaken in phases. Upon completion, the project will greatly improve the city’s transportation system and its reputation in the modern world of Indian cities.
