The Gujarat Cabinet has given a green signal to the ambitious ‘Wire-Free City Mission’, which is expected to provide a boost to the city infrastructure and city beauty with the initial financial support of Rs 500 crore for the first phase. The program is designed to eliminate overhead utility lines and install them in the ground, making our cities safer, cleaner and more beautiful throughout the state.

In the first phase, the project will include major urban areas and key urban corridors. As part of the mission, wires for electricity, telecom, internet and cable television will be moved underground from their overhead locations. The move will help the state government’s measures to modernize city infrastructure and ensure a better living standard for the city’s inhabitants.

The project is expected to enhance the reliability of the utility services as well as enhance the street’s appearance in the city. Storms, heavy rain, strong winds and accidents can cause damage to overhead cables. This move will help to minimize service interruptions and maintenance issues.

Also expected to be covered in the Wire-Free City Mission are safety issues surfacing from knotted and exposed wires. Overhead cables may present a hazard for electrical accidents and fire in many urban environments. Underground cabling is generally considered to be a safer choice and is commonly used on projects of modern urban planning projects throughout the world.

The mission will necessitate close coordination between electricity distribution companies, telecom operators, internet service providers, and the local urban bodies, government sources state. Phased implementation and detailed planning will be undertaken to ensure that the transition to the new premises will not affect public services greatly.

The initiative has been welcomed by urban development experts, who point out that cleaner streetscapes and infrastructure improvements can help to improve living standards, attract visitors and enhance investment opportunities. This project will also dovetail with the smart cities and urban development efforts being undertaken in Gujarat.

It will be a large project and will likely be difficult to construct and logistically, but it will have an impact on the community that will last for a long time. The allocation of ₹500 crore is a start to what might be one of Gujarat’s biggest initiatives on urban infrastructure modernization.

Wire-Free City Mission’s decision has brought a big leap forward in strengthening the resilience, planning and preparedness of Gujarat cities for the future. More information about the cities chosen in the first phase and deadlines for implementation will be made available in the next few weeks.
