Landslide blocks mountain road in Uttarakhand as authorities halt trekking and issue high alert

Uttarakhand authorities have halted trekking operations in several high-altitude areas, and a two-day severe weather warning was issued by the India Meteorological Department. The warning, which is valid in the next 48 hours, has put several districts on high alert as the state is getting prepared to face potentially hazardous weather patterns.

The IMD says that the region is prone to receiving heavy rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds, and hailstorms. The speed of the wind will be up to 40-50 km/h in certain locations, which will amplify the threat of falling debris and disruptions. Light to moderate snowfall is also expected in higher altitudes, especially beyond 4,000 meters, making the situation even more challenging for travellers and trekkers.

The state government has reacted to the prediction by taking a preemptive action and temporarily halting trekking expeditions through mountain trails which are currently in vogue. The government argued that the walking paths are very prone in case of bad weather and the threat of landslides, flash floods, slippery tracks and sudden changes in the visibility are a great source of injury to human life.

The district administrations especially those of Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Pithoragarh and Nainital have been put on high alert. Disaster management units and local police have been put on standby so that they can promptly respond to any untoward incident.

It has also been recommended that non-essential travelling to hilly regions should be avoided by tourists and pilgrims during this time. The government is keeping a very tight rein on the road situation and river levels because it is highly likely that heavy rain in the area may cause impromptu water overflow and road blockages.

The early warning associated with the IMD is part of the continuous attempts to reduce risks in the state that is often subjected to extreme weather conditions. The Himalayan topography of Uttarakhand is very weak, and thus landslides and flash floods are highly vulnerable to heavy rainfall.

Authorities stressed that this is a precautionary measure to protect lives through the temporary discontinuation of trekking. They have encouraged people to be informed of official advisories and adhere to safety measures until the weather is better.

The scenario will still be under review, and any decision on travelling and trekking activity will be based on revised projections by the IMD.
