In an effort to boost the horticulture industry, the Uttarakhand government has presented a bold vision to develop the hill state into a predominant apple-producing state to target an annual revenue of 2000 crore in the next few years. The relocation is likely to greatly increase the income of the orchardists and will offer new jobs to the mountainous areas.
At present, the apple is cultivated in Uttarakhand at an average of 300 350 crore in a year, with the largest production occurring in the districts of Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Chamoli, and Pauri. Nevertheless, the officials are sure that the state has much more potential, as the climate, altitude, and soil of the area are conducive to high-quality varieties of apples.
One of the priorities that the government has placed is to promote the high-density farming of apples. This new technique of cultivation means that there are increased saplings per hectare, and orchard management techniques are also enhanced, resulting in much increased production as compared to the old-fashioned way of farming. High-density plantations can produce three to four times more, according to experts, giving farmers a better profit on less land.
The state will promote the transition by offering quality saplings, technical training, and financial incentives to growers. The subsidies should be provided for the establishment of modern orchards, irrigation systems, and protective netting. The governments are also striving to intensify nursery facilities to make sure that they have disease-free and climate-resistant apple plants.
According to the officials, the apple expansion mission has not only to do with increasing production but also with the enhancement of the overall value chain. There are also attempts to improve the cold storage facilities, grading units and the market linkages in order to ensure that the farmers get higher prices for their produce. The government hopes that through the development of post-harvest infrastructure, it will be possible to lower the losses and make Uttarakhand apples more competitive in the national markets.
The project is also regarded as having a role in ensuring that the migration out of hill districts is checked. The government expects to make apple farming more lucrative and viable to attract young people to stay in their villages and get involved in commercial horticulture.
When properly done, the 2000 crore apple mission would make Uttarakhand one of the market force contenders to the known apple-producing states and would usher in a new era of wealth among the orchardists in the region.
