Night view of Ahmedabad’s illuminated footbridge over the Sabarmati River with colorful lights, highlighting news about the city planning 31 new high-rise buildings to earn the ‘Sky City’ tag.

In Ahmedabad, one of the most ambitious urban changes in the history of this city is underway, as it is planned to build 31 high-rise buildings over 100 meters. The project, which has gained massive attention, is being referred to as a project that would make Ahmedabad the Burj Khalifa of Gujarat, and this would be the first step towards making the city a modern sky city. The rationale of this development is to take the skyline of Ahmedabad to the global scale and to make the city stand among the world’s cities that are characterized by architectural wonders.

The proposed skyscrapers will rise in some of the most promising areas of the city, such as the Sabarmati riverfront area, the fast-growing SG Highway area, and sections of the GIFT City influence zone. Such areas are already well-developed in terms of infrastructure and, therefore, are the best areas to develop high-rise buildings. Ahmedabad was traditionally characterized by the low-rise building pattern and the traditional architecture, but the city is shifting towards a more vertical model of development, which is in line with the global trends in urban development.

The difference with this project is not only in the height of the buildings, but the futuristic characteristics that will be added in the form of structures. The developers are working towards the incorporation of green building technology, sustainable designs, intelligent energy and a combination of business and residential facilities. Among the features to be put in place are rooftop gardens, sky lounges, high-speed elevators, high security systems, multi-level parking, as well as energy-efficient buildings. These are the aspects that can be found in a world-class city like Dubai, Singapore, and Hong Kong, and the idea is to apply the same measure of innovation to Ahmedabad.

The high number of skyscrapers growing is also attributed to the rapid growth of the economic importance of the city. As the city of Ahmedabad emerges as a key financial, technological and global enterprise hub, especially in the areas around GIFT City, there has been a sudden surge in demand for contemporary office space, high-end homes and mixed-use business centres. City planners are of the view that developing a clump of such high-rise buildings will not only fulfil the demands but also make the city more attractive to the world.

Experts working on the project consider that upon its completion, the skyline will create a strong visual impression which can shock the whole world with its size and modernity. In addition to aesthetics, the project will enhance tourism, the inflow of foreign investments and will create a large number of jobs. Although the construction period is yet to be confirmed, the future of Ahmedabad is evident: a city that will grow taller than ever before and will be able to compete with the major metropolitan skylines of the world.
