Nainital district has also been on a high alert in anticipation of the upcoming visit to the region by President Droupadi Murmu, for which a huge security deployment and intense surveillance have been made. The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of the district, Dr Manjunath T.C., has declared a red alert, suspecting the whole district to high security to ensure that the red light district passes without any incident during the visit of the President.
As reports suggest, the police in the district have increased security checks and patrols in the major localities. Hotels, guesthouses and roadside dhabas have been allocated police teams that authenticate the identity of every visitor. Tight scrutiny of vehicles and people accessing Nainital is also ordered. The SSP has also directed the officers to be on high alert twenty-four hours a day with special patrolling arrangements in sensitive areas.
The red alert is part of the elaborate security plan set up to ensure that the President attends the scheduled programs in the district. Checking of all entry and exit points of Nainital is under tight control, and the officials are advised to do prior verifications of all suspicious individuals or vehicles. Diversions of routes have also been introduced as a security measure to control the traffic movement during the movement of the President to smooth passage through the official convoy.
It is reported that 24 hours prior to the arrival of the President, some of the roads will be temporarily closed and the flow of vehicles will be limited at some important stretches. It has given advice to tourists and locals to obey the instructions of the police and find other ways. The district administration has also begged the residents to be cooperative with the security forces during this time of high alertness.
SSP Dr Manjunath of SSP said that the first priority is maintaining security and ensuring convenience to the people. We have intensive checking campaigns in the district. All the police stations are instructed to conduct verification drives in order to keep law and order, he said.
Nainital is a big tourist attraction and therefore, in high-profile visits, security management becomes important because they are likely to be in large numbers. To effectively control the situation, the administration has liaised with the intelligence agencies, disaster response teams, and Special Protection Group (SPG).
The visit of President Droupadi Murmu to Nainital is likely to consist of some official and ceremonial activities. The administration is not sparing any stone towards having a safe and well organized event.
The picturesque hill town is at present on one of the highest security preparedness levels it has had in some time, thanks to the red alert being in place and routes being diverted.
