The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Deoghar, has scripted another important addition to its increasing list of healthcare provisions with the introduction of the outpatient department (OPD) Ayurveda and Homoeopathy. This new project is to bring together the old systems of medicine and the new system of healthcare so that the patients can have a greater choice of the treatment methodology under one roof.

AIIMS Deoghar opened its services officially with the Executive Director and the CEO, Dr. Saurabh Varshney. The move has seen the institute make a stride in advancing the AYUSH practices so that patients do not have to strictly rely on the advanced form of allopathic treatments, but are also allowed to access the time-tested forms of traditional treatments. The relocation is being regarded as a big boost to the accessibility of healthcare in the area, especially by the people who believe in or depend on Ayurvedic and Homoeopathic treatment.

The Ayurveda OPD will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in Room Number 7 within the hospital premises, with Homoeopathy OPD on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays in Room Number 5. These two services can be registered by patients at Counter Number 11, which is on the ground floor in the D-Block building. The slots to register will be fixed between 8:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., giving the patients sufficient time to finish the formalities and then meet the doctors.

This will be developed as part of the larger vision of AIIMS Deoghar, which will offer comprehensive medical care that incorporates both modern and traditional medical systems. Since the time it started, the institute has steadily developed its services, starting with basic OPDs, emergency care and inpatient facilities, and currently it has adopted Ayurveda and Homoeopathy. The introduction of such new OPDs evidences the level of interest of the government to ensure that other forms of medicine are more accessible to the people.

The commencement of such services is very significant to the population of Deoghar and neighbouring places. A large number of patients who used to travel long distances to consult Ayurvedic or Homoeopathic doctors will now be able to receive such treatment locally at AIIMS. It also guarantees a more comprehensive approach to healthcare, as the patient will be able to choose the treatment methods that will fit best to his/her conditions and preferences.

This move has enhanced the position of AIIMS Deoghar as a healthcare delivery centre of excellence. The merger of traditional and modern within a single platform also points to a future-prepared approach in the medical sphere because, under existing systems of medicine, the patient is provided with free choice and can enjoy the advantages of different systems of medicine.
