Lightning flashes across a dark sky during a thunderstorm as a warning message reads “Thunderstorm Alert in Jharkhand, Winds Up to 50 km/h.”

Inhabitants in Jharkhand have been warned to be on high alert because the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has put a weather alert indicating the occurrence of thunderstorms, heavy rains, and strong winds in many regions in the state. The most recent projection is that the winds can hit a speed of up to 50 km/hours with lightning and heavy rain in various districts.

The notification has been applied to 17 districts, which include major cities like Deoghar and Jamshedpur. Meteorologists have cautioned, reminding that such regions may experience unexpected weather such as dark clouds, thunder and sudden rains, which are in brief, and may be strong.

The officials of the weather attributed the current situation to weather instability in the atmosphere and damp winds blowing across eastern India. Thunderstorms and strong winds are usually caused by the build-up of temperature and moisture in the air, which in turn causes the formation of convective clouds. These systems occur frequently in season change non-tropical interaction periods of warm, moist air with cooler winds at higher altitudes.

The authorities have warned that the powerful winds that have been shown to blow at a speed of 40 to 50 km per hour might cause some minor inconvenience. Chances of breaking tree branches, power outages, and the inability to travel on the road because of the heavy rain and low visibility are possible. Thunderstorm lightning strikes are also dangerous, especially in open and rural regions.

In response, local governments in the concerned districts have been encouraging the people to take measures to practice safety during the alert phase. During thunderstorms, people have been warned not to stand under trees, not to go near electric poles, or to take refuge in buildings. It has also been requested that the farmers be careful when working in open fields, as lightning can occur during such atmospheric conditions.

The weather department also added that such storm activities can take place in brief periods but can be severe with an abrupt drop of rain and severe winds. The authorities are going to keep a close eye on the situation and give updates in case of worsening weather conditions.

Thunderstorms and heavy rain are common in Jharkhand during the pre-monsoon time, but the severity may differ in different regions. According to experts, such a type of rain can be used to provide some relief in increasing temperatures, but it can equally lead to some localized disturbance.

The citizens are encouraged to keep up with the official weather alerts and act on the orders given by the local government to remain safe during the predicted storms.
