In a great step to modernize the education system and facilitate smooth campus services to students, Nalanda Open University ( NOU ) has taken up a great step in enhancing digitization by uploading more than 67,000 academic documents to DigiLocker that is an official portal of Government of India on digital storage of documents through its number one secure storage and accessibility portal. The initiative is destined to cover thousands of students and enable them to download their degrees, marksheets, and certificates at any time and from any place with ease.

The achievement of such a landmark digital transformation has been led by the University Registrar, Professor Abhay Kumar Singh, and DigiLocker Nodal Officer, Dr. Kiran Pandey, who have recently formalized a vital collaboration with the Education Department of the Bihar Government. This partnership permits the smooth integration of academic records of the university into the DigiLocker platform, which is meant to streamline the process, saving on papers, reducing delays and securing and ease of access to education credentials.

On average, the university has managed to directly move 25,943 degree certificates and 41,198 marksheets to DigiLocker. Not only is the digitization project part of the overall Digital India project of the government, but also consistent with the new type of institutions and learning modes introduced by the proposed National Education Policy (NEP), which focuses more on digital infrastructure, student-focused services and credit mobility.

Talking about the developments, Registrar Professor Abhay Kumar Singh said that NOU believes in embracing new, student-friendly practices. This action will empower our students. They do not need to travel to get physical copies of certificates at the university. All this will be made available on DigiLocker, merely at the press of a button, he added.

The technical developments were highlighted by Dr. Kiran Pandey, who is a nodal officer of the DigiLocker integration. The institution has also adopted new software tools which automatically update student details and create IDs of Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) on admission. During academic years 2024 and 2025, the student ABC IDs have been uploaded on the official ABC portal, creating a situation where the academic credits of learners are safely stored and may be transferred across institutions in future.

The work of digitization was reviewed in an online meeting with the top officials of the Government of India and Bihar, in which Nalanda Open University presented its progress. The administration disclosed that uploading of remaining records is a process still going on and is likely to conclude soon.

This project will be a long-term advantage to both the present students and alumni. And with ease of access to the DigiLocker, one would be able to have instant access to their formal academic records to be used when one is applying to a job or when they are doing their higher studies or when they are availing any of the government schemes plus there is added advantage of Never losing the paper and the damage of paper.

The innovative thinking of the Nalanda Open University places it among the top universities in the state of Bihar, which have embraced the idea of digitizing education. It eases the administrative burden but also acts as a bonding agent by promoting transparency and being accessible. With India still heading in graphs into the tech empowered academic space, such initiatives are much necessary to make sure that the students are furnished with the tools and systems that they will require in the digital era.
