A large-scale drinking water crisis has cropped up in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand, where close to two lakh population is likely to be affected in the water supply at the domestic sphere, on Thursday, March 19, 2026. The issue has primarily hit Haldwani and other surrounding regions, where the residents were alerted that the supply of drinking water would be suspended during the day, courtesy of the repair job associated with the water system in the region.
Local reports reveal that the cause of the disruption is a repair in the gate chamber at Kathgodam Calltax, where broken grills are being repaired. Due to this maintenance, the Sheesh Mahal filter plant would be closed most of the day. The plant is of extreme importance in treating the water that is delivered to the Gaula Barrage by a canal system and then distributed to the households located in Haldwani and the nearby areas. The filter plant has been shut down, resulting in the temporary suspension of the supply of treated drinking water to houses.
The crisis came only a few days following the hit of the severe weather in Nainital and its surrounding, which comprised of storms, rain and hailstorms, which broke the electricity infrastructure and derailed normal life. It was reported that a few sections of Nainital city and Haldwani had long power cuts due to the bad weather that had damaged the electric poles, lines and the local supply systems. Power continued to be cut off in most locations, posing problems to households, industries and government services.
The drinking water situation was also aggravated by the power outage. Water supply systems in hilly areas like Nainital are commonly based on electricity so as to act as a source of water by means of pumps, tube wells and treatment plants. Water supply may slow down or even cease when there is a failure in electricity. The hardship of residents already existed in the aftermath of the storm, and the closure of the filter plant has only worsened the issue for a significantly greater number of people.
The recent outburst shows how delicate city infrastructure is in the hill districts, where unfavorable weather can easily lead to the occurrence of trickle-down effects in the electrical and water systems. Access to clean drinking water is the issue of concern to the residents as it relates to their daily needs like cooking, washing and using it in their homes. It is presumed that local authorities will get the system back to work once some repairs are done, but meanwhile, thousands of families in the district are preparing to have a tough day.
