The long-awaited Sherpur–Kanhauli six-lane road project in Bihar has moved a step closer to reality with the opening of its construction tender. The bid process has been initiated by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), marking significant progress in a project that is considered a crucial segment of the proposed Patna Ring Road.
The six-lane stretch, estimated to cost around ₹777 crore, will connect Sherpur and Kanhauli over a length of nearly nine kilometres. The project is being developed with financial participation from both the Centre and the Bihar government, with funding reportedly shared on a 50:50 basis. Officials said that once the bidding process is completed and a contractor is finalised, construction work is expected to begin without further delay.
The Sherpur–Kanhauli road forms an important part of the larger Patna Ring Road initiative, a major infrastructure plan aimed at easing traffic congestion in and around Patna. The ring road project is designed to divert heavy and long-distance vehicles away from the city’s crowded core areas, thereby improving traffic flow and reducing travel time for commuters.
The project had faced delays over the past two years due to funding and land acquisition hurdles. Sources indicate that the delay was largely due to the pending release of the state government’s share of funds. With the financial issues resolved, the tender process has now been formally opened, reviving momentum for the long-pending plan.
Land acquisition procedures have also been initiated in villages falling along the proposed alignment. Notices have reportedly been issued to affected landowners, and compensation will be provided following document verification as per government norms. Authorities have assured that payments will be made directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts to ensure transparency.
Once completed, the Sherpur–Kanhauli six-lane road is expected to significantly improve connectivity between Patna and neighbouring districts such as Saran and Vaishali. It will also create smoother access to key regional routes and industrial corridors, potentially boosting economic activity in the surrounding areas.
Infrastructure experts believe that the progress of this stretch will play a vital role in accelerating the overall completion of the Patna Ring Road project. With the tender now open, all eyes are on the next phase — selection of the executing agency and the commencement of on-ground construction work.
