A significant milestone in sustainable infrastructure is the completion of the longest green corridor in Asia on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, which is now ready to be inaugurated by Narendra Modi. The project will make high-speed connectivity, and also includes the most sophisticated environmental protection, against which a new standard of environmentally safe highway development in the country is set.
The green corridor is a specially designed area that covers approximately 1214 kilometres to facilitate the safe passage of wildlife on the expressway. Going through ecologically sensitive areas, some of which are in the vicinity of the Rajaji National Park, the highway has higher roadways, underpasses, and animal crossings. These are meant to reduce human-wildlife conflict and conserve natural habitat without interruption in traffic flow.
The Expressway of Delhi-Dehradun itself is one of the major infrastructure projects; the total distance is approximately 210 kilometres long, which links the national capital and the capital of Uttarakhand, Dehradun. After completion, the expressway is projected to cut down the travelling time between Delhi and Dehradun, which is almost six or seven hours, to approximately two and a half hours. This massive cut is bound to favour daily commuters, tourists, and businesses.
The government has claimed that the project indicates the government’s attention to a balance between quick development and environmental management. This expressway is built with green engineering practices to sustain biodiversity, unlike traditional highway construction, which usually interferes with the ecosystem. The pathway is supposed to support the flow of animals like the elephants, deer and other animals living in the forested areas along the path.
Besides the environmental advantage, the expressway would also increase the economic development in the area. The better connection will allow better access to major tourist attractions such as Haridwar, Rishikesh and Mussoorie, as well as aid trade and logistics in nearby towns and districts. The project will create job opportunities and will promote investment in the area.
The green corridor is expected to be inaugurated in the near future, with the last preparations in progress. The project not only improves the road infrastructure in India but also brings to light a forward-looking sustainability of development.
As the nation proceeds to increase its transport network, the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is a project that can be used as a template in future projects- proving that economic development and environmental protection can co-exist.
