Salboni (West Bengal), June 18: He hadn't uttered a word ever since he and his comrades had been captured by the joint forces on Wednesday. Tagged as a 'Maoist', this 20-year old youth was apparently caught alive during the encounter.

He is a mute and mentally challenged youth from Duli village. His detention has raised doubts about the mechanism the policemen follow while arresting suspect Maoists.

Rameshwar Murmu has already been charged in criminal cases, which include sedition under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). He was remanded 15 days judicial custody by Midnapore court on Thursday.

According to the police, the arrested Maoist hadn't said a word. His father, who was on the brink of collapse, stated that his son can scream if someone hits him, but he can't speak a word.

The youth had suffers from congenital epilepsy. He also developed ENT problems at a very early age that led to the loss of his speech. The boy failed to pursue higher education owing to this ailment. His father even produced medical certificates to support his statement.

It was during the encounter that the youth broke free and ran carelessly. Before his mother could get hold of him, police did. The policemen did not allow his parents to come near him. Despite repeated pleadings and asserting that their son was mentally challenged, the police refused to free him.

The youth's parents have no idea where their son is and they can't even muster courage to enquire about him in the police station.
