| Kolkata, July 18: Every rose comes with a thorn and a little carelessness is all you need to get yourself pricked. The same holds true for nature.
There had been instances in the past where people had fallen prey to raging nature, which is otherwise a treat for our eyes and a source of sheer pleasure. In a fresh incident that once again proved the worst consequences that nature can do in its cruel best, Kanu Das, a resident of Baranagar in North Kolkata surrendered to the high current in river Ganga on Saturday leading to his death.
This 40-something man, according to the local residents and his neighbour, was a regular drinker and like everyday he had gone to the river to take his bath. It was around 2:30 pm in the afternoon when local bathers realized that Kanu was not anywhere near to them and he has already been taken away by the current.
After a frantic search by the local people they started to realises the fatality of the incident. Few minutes before he vanished, he was seen struggling to swim with his state of intoxication adding to his woes.
When asked abut the details, few indifferent localites addressed Kanu as a drunkard who, they feel, lost balance in his inebriated state. Family members were informed about the incident who would perhaps convey the same to the local Palpara PS. The casual tone with which people narrated the incident did imply how we ourselves have undermined our values. It is our recklessness and lack of self-control that allow these accidents to happen.
This untoward incident once again raises the same question of unawareness among the common people and the need for security measures. With so many drowning cases occurring in the recent days, it is now high time for the civic agencies to employ people in the banks of the river so that the rescue efforts could be better.
A proper guideline for those who want to venture into the river needs to be issued by the concerned authority so that people pay attention to the do's and don'ts. |
