Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Police today registered a case of criminal conspiracy against unnamed people for attempting to trigger a stampede at the rally of the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and addressed by Chief Minister Mayawati here on Monday.

The case lodged by the station house officer of Aashiana police station, under which the rally ground falls, termed the sudden attack by a swarm of bees at the rally venue as part of a "pre-meditated" plan.

Lucknow range Deputy Inspector General of Police Rajiv Krishna told the media that police had reasons to believe that "somebody was behind stirring the beehive".

"Our investigation team is on the job. We will surely crack the case and take suitable action against the culprits. Their action could have led to a major stampede as there were lakhs of people on the ground," he said.

Addressing her party MPs and legislators here Thursday, the chief minister said: "A fire was deliberately lit in some bushes behind the rally ground to stir a huge beehive from where bees naturally dashed towards the ground. Considering that the bushes were inside the boundary of the Ambedkar University which is under the control of the central government, I see a dirty hand of the opposition behind it." (IANS)
