Bareilly: Curfew clamped here after communal violence was relaxed for 14 hours today but authorities permitted only cycles, autos and rickshaws on the roads.

With no further violence reported, the curfew was lifted from 5 in the morning to 7 p.m., Superintendent of Police Rakesh Jolly told the media.

The curfew was relaxed for 11 hours on Wednesday. The district administration has decided to reopen all educational institutions on March 22.

Police said no violence had been reported since Friday evening when 15 people, including a senior police officer, were injured in clashes with a mob opposed to the release of Muslim cleric Maulana Tauquir Raza Khan.

Khan, president of the Ittehad-e-Millat Council, was arrested for allegedly giving a "rabble rousing speech" that sparked communal violence in parts of Bareilly.

The authorities are focussing on Prem Nagar, Subashnagar, Kila, Kotwali and Baradari areas.

A minor communal clash over the passage of a Barawafat procession followed by sporadic arson March 2 led to curfew in several parts of Bareilly. (IANS)
