Alwar: A man end his life on Wednesday after his wife lost in the panchayat elections. He was forced to undertake this ultimate step as took a huge amount of money as debt for doing the poll campaign in favor of his wife.

Kasturi Devi enrolled herself in the panchayat samiti elections. Her husband Dhani Ram Jatav collected a sum of Rs 1.5 lakh and used the entire cash for Kasturi Devi. Later when Dhani Ram heard about the defeat of his wife in the elections, he was unable to bear the shock and took poison to end his life. Villagers said that he committed suicide because of his inability to repay the huge debt, which he used for the campaigning purpose.

Since there is no official label on the expenses and most of the seats are kept reserved for SC/ST, OBC and women candidates, the power of wealth dominates the panchayat elections. As per state election commission; no such limits on campaign expenditure exists in case of zilla parishad polls, but still there is a certain limit on the expenses for banners and posters, which is ten thousand rupees.
