Bharatpur, June 24: In a shocking incident, a local panchayat (village council) in Bharatpur district of Rajasthan has ordered a village to boycott a family for not organising a customary feast on the death of a member, police said today.

As directed by a lower court, a complaint was filed on Wednesday by Ramesh Chand Jatav, a resident of Nagla Bandh Bhagatpura, against 25-30 villagers, including panchayat members, a police official told media.

"He said these people were forcing his family members to organise a 'mrityu bhoj' (death feast) after the demise of his mother in April," the official said.

"When he failed to do so, the panchayat imposed a fine of Rs.2,100 and asked other villagers to boycott the family," he added.

Jatav said: "I sought help from other villagers but even they refused. It has become very difficult for me to live. No one talks or gives us water or anything to eat."

Failing to get help from anywhere, he approached the lower court in Wair town in Bharatpur district, 180 km from Jaipur.

"I do not know how the villagers will react after they get to know of my complaint," he added. (IANS)
