Jodhpur: Death toll crossed 180 in the stampede that took place at the Chamunda temple in Jodhpur on Tuesday morning. According to reports pouring in the toll may go further high and cross 200, as a large number are still in critical stage in various hospital in the city. The dead pilgrims include many children. However, the official version about the number of children, who died in the stampede is not available till now. But it is supposed to be on higher side. Hospitals also reported shortage of reserve oxygen thus worsening the situation further. The stampede took place when thousands of worshippers, gathered on the occasion of the first day of Navaratri, broke through the barricades as there was rumour of a bomb in the temple premises. As the rumour spread, more and more people tried to escape the premises breaking the barricades and barging into other side of the fence. This caused further casualties.
The incident occurred in the queue for men pilgrims vising the temple. About 40 thousand men were queued-up for darshan when the tragedy fell on them. Chamunda temple is situated at Mehrangrah near Jodhpur. Dead and injured were taken to the Mahatma Gandhi Hospital. It is feared the number of casualties may go up. In the meanwhile the temple has been closed. |
