New Delhi, Aug 9: Contamination of ground water in Punjab has long been the major concern for the state and the country and this issue has recently come to the limelight owing to its unbridled growth.

Today, the issue was raised in the Lok Sabha. The prime reason touted to be responsible for this contamination is the dumping of depleted uranium in Afghanisatan and Iraq. US forces have been accused of dumping them.

While talking about the issue during Zero Hour, Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary (Congress) stated that the issue has become grave. It is to be noted that ground water in some parts of Punjab have registered a high level of contamination, which is about 15 times more than the acceptable limit set by World Health Organisation.

The Central Ground Water Authority (CGWA) had found para-nitrophenol, an organic compound, in the water. The underground aquifers have been contaminated.

Chaudhury reiterated that ground water contamination is real cause of worry for the people in the state and government should look into it very seriously.
