| Mumbai, Aug 23: The undertrial prisoners lodged in jails across Maharashtra may soon lose out on their comfortable life after Dawood Ibrahim's gang member allegedly attacked gangster Abu Salem with a sharpened spoon inside a prison.
The prisoners, who have been enjoying homely treatment including access to luxuries like home-made food, fruits, sweets and transistors, may soon have to cut down on such lifestyle.
According to Principal Secretary of Home department (Prisons), Medha Gadgil, the Home department will appeal for banning access to special items given to undertrials by the court.
The department had taken the decision to file an appeal after Minister of State for Home Ramesh Bagwe paid a visit to Arthur Road Jail in July. The minister had expressed surprise at the luxurious treatment offered to the under-trial prisoners in the jail. He observed that the toilets for some prisoners were of 'five star' standard.
Minister had taken the initiative to bar the prisoners from availing such special facilities. |
