New Delhi: Around 30 Tibetan activists were detained today when they tried to storm the Chinese embassy here as part of their protest on the eve of the anniversary of Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule, police said.

The activists, including women, sporting headbands, holding placards and shouting slogans of "Free Tibet" reached the heavily guarded embassy in Chanakyapuri, the capital's diplomatic enclave, around 11:30 a.m.

"They tried to storm the Chinese embassy at Shantipath but were detained by the police force. They were taken to Chanakyapuri police station," Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) S. Dash told the media.

Dash said the security around the Chinese embassy has been strengthened and more police force has been deployed keeping in mind the 51st anniversary of Tibetan uprising on Wednesday.

The Dalai Lama fled into exile in 1959 and established his government-in-exile at McLeodganj, near Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh. It is not recognised by any country. (IANS)
