New Delhi: A court today sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing a student leader in Delhi University and said his case should not come up for remission till he serves 30 years in jail.

Additional Sessions Judge Kamini Lau also fined Jitender alias Kalla Rs.5 lakhs for killing Anil Badana, president of the Satyawati College Students Union, in 1999.

Of this, Rs.2 lakh would be paid to the family of Badana.

"This case cannot be put on the same pedestal as other ordinary murder cases... (It) can be classified as a 'rare case' which calls for the exercising of alternative options by the court," said Lau, specifying the period of sentence against Kalla.

The court noted that the convict had escaped from police custody and, according to the prosecution, threatened witnesses. He also did not show any remorse over the killing.

It also held Kalla guilty of attempting to murder Madan Lal, who was injured in indiscriminate firing by him at a marriage on March 10, 1999.

Kalla allegedly killed Badana because he was going to depose against him in a criminal case. (IANS)
