| New Delhi: This Holi you can surely look for something different. Women inmates of the Tihar Jail are credited for having developed edible colours, which are set to be sold across the national capital. It was the initiative of a group of 20 woman inmates at Tihar's Jail no 6 to prepare edible gulaal (colours) by using herbal raw materials, which include flowers.
Talking to the media about the edible colours spokesperson of an NGO explained how women have used arrowroot powder and flower petals to prepare these colours. Ingredients also include natural fragrances and food grade colour. The spokesperson also added that the colours are completely skin friendly and also eatable.
The NGO has been working with the Tihar jail inmates for more than 15 years.
Unlike the colours prepared by the greedy manufacturers the homemade colours prepared by the women are not adulterated with diesel, engine oil, glass powder and other elements, which cause various health hazards including nausea and breathlessness.
According to the Public Relations Officer, women of the prison have put this effort to provide inmates some source of income. Moreover, the jail inmates are given training to make the colours out of purely herbal dry colour. It has been stated that the revenue earned from the sale of the products will go into the Prisoners' Welfare Fund. |
