Sania a match away from US Open main draw

| New York , Aug 27: India's Sania Mirza is just a match away from qualifying into the US Open tennis main draw.
Sania, ranked 160, beat Russian Elena Bovina 6-3, 6-3 in the third and final qualifying round here on Thursday. The 23-year-old Indian now plays 31-year-old Colombian Catalina Castano against whom she leads 2-0.
This is the first time since 2005 that Sania is playing in the qualifying round to enter a Grand Slam main draw because of dip in her rankings.
Her best performance here was her fourth round appearance in 2005. (IANS) |
