Administrative issues may cost Indian hockey team dear

New Delhi, Aug 10: The field hockey team of India might be facing the prospect of being unable to participate in the Commonwealth Games or other major events such as the World Cup. The issues that India faces with its hockey administration could actually cost it dear in these mega tournaments.

The International Hockey Federation, the controlling body of world hockey, has stated Hockey India is the parent body of the game in India. The union sports ministry on the other hand wants to bring back the Indian Hockey Federation to run the sport.

The sports ministry’s decision follows a court order that was passed in July 2010. This order stated that the Indian Hockey Federation should be brought back. The organisation was dissolved in April 2008 by the chiefs of the Indian Olympics Association. The main reasons in this case were poor results and allegations of bribery.

The Indian Hockey Federation was being led by Kanwar Pal Singh Gill, a decorated police official. The Delhi High Court had however ruled positively on a petition by Gill. It negated the government ruling and asked the Indian Hockey Federation to be reinstated.

The Indian government had asked the International Hockey Federation to derecognise the Hockey India and let the Indian Hockey Federation run the game. However, Leandro Negre, the FIH president apparently did not approve of the request.
