Kolkata, July 23: Punjab scraped into the quarterfinals, prevailing over Manipur 4-2 in a tie-breaker in the 64th Santosh Trophy national soccer competition on Thursday.

The match rolled into the penalty shootout after the two sides finished 1-1 after the scheduled 90 minutes and 2-2 after half an hour of extra time at the Salt Lake Stadium.

In the tie-breaker, Sunandan Singh and Syed Farid found the target for Manipur, while Naoba Singh and Subhas Singh disappointed.

On the other hand, Harpreet Singh, Parveen Kumar, Randeep Singh and Gurpreet Singh converted the set-pieces for eight time champions Punjab. Earlier, Balraj Singh made the scoreline 1-0 for Punjab, before Ngauba Singh restored parity.

In extra time, Manipur seemed on way to the last eight as Reisangmi Vashum scored in the 103rd minute to make it 2-1 for the northeastern state. However, Punjab came back with Amandeep Singh Batra netting five minutes before the final whistle. (IANS)
