Kolkata, July 16: Three time champions Maharashtra began with a bang breezing past Chandigarh 4-0 in a cluster II match of the 64th Santosh Trophy inter-state soccer competition at Howrah near here on Thursday.

In the other cluster face-offs on the opening day, Andhra Pradesh prevailed over Tripura 2-1 while Karnataka scraped past Meghalaya 1-0. Chandigharh put up a stiff fight for the first half an hour of the game at the Howrah Municipal Corporation Stadium, matching their fancied opponents move for move.

However, Reuben D'Souza put the Maharashtrians ahead in the 35th minute by putting home a Paresh Shivalkar centre from the right. Leading 1-0 at the breather, Maharashtra pressed for increasing the margin in the second session, but the Chandigarh rearguard foiled the moves.

But the floodgates were suddenly opened in the later stages of the game as Maharashtra upped the ante during a nine-minute blitz during which they struck thrice to put the issue beyond the union territory players.

Surojit Bose struck off a Jatin Singh Bisht cross in the 80th minute to make the scoreline 2-0. Bose put his name in the scorer's list again a shortwhile later, before Alex Ambrose netted one more.

The other cluster II game at the Vidyasagar stadium in Barasat saw Faisal and Vijay Kumar find the target for Andhra, while Litton Majumder scored the only goal for Tripura.
