Galle (Sri Lanka), July 19: Heavy rains washed out the second day's play in the first cricket Test between India and Sri Lanka here today.

Incessant overnight rains had left the outfield soggy at the Galle International Stadium with no play possible before lunch. The conditions further worsened following a thunderstorm.

The umpires were scheduled to inspect at 2.30 pm but relentless rain erased any chances of beginning the play though a brief spell of sunshine did raise some hope.

The start of play on the opening day Sunday was delayed by 30 minutes and it was called off because of bad light with 22 overs still to be bowled. The overcast conditions are likely to truncate the five-day Test.

Sri Lanka, batting first, were 256 for two when play was halted on day one, with Tharanga Paranavitana batting on 110 and Mahela Jayawardene eight. (IANS)
