| New Delhi, July 7: Sri Lanka's legendary spinner Muttiah Muralitharan may have decided to retire from the Test cricket, but the cricketer himself is hopeful that India's Harbhajan Singh can maintain his legacy and touch his record.
Muralitharan is the highest wicket-taker in both One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Test Cricket with 512 and 792 wickets respectively. He has managed this huge haul in 132 tests and 337 ODIs only. The spin wizard, who is all set to play his last test match against India beginning on July 18 at Galle, has taken 97 wickets in 21 test matches with six 5 wicket hauls. He has also twice bagged 10 wickets in a test match against Indians who are regarded as the finest players of spin bowling.
However his favorite opponents have been England against whom he has 112 wickets in 16 matches with 8 five wicket hauls and 4 ten wicket hauls.
Among the current crop of tests cricketers the Indian offie is the second-highest wicket taker in Test cricket just after Muralitharan and hence the logical successor to his throne.
Muralitharan, needs eight more wickets in his farewell Test match to reach the 800-mark.
Harbhajan has 355 wickets under his belt from 83 Test matches. He has taken 50 wickets against the Lankan lions in 13 tests signifying a decent record. It seems to be a finger licking prospect for cricket aficionados as the spin king and his anointed heir go head to head in the king's backyard. |
