Mumbai: Bringing much fame to Indian sports, Pankaj Advani emerged as the winner of World Professional Billiards Championship on Sunday. He was too good for his rival Mike Russell, who is also nine times champion. It is a historic victory for Advani as he became the second Indian after Geet Sethi to win the title in its 139th years of history. Geet Sethi was the last Indian to win in 2006.

Pankaj was going through a bad patch prior to this global competition and there were grave doubts about his prospects in the World Professional Billiards Championship. Although he had already won the amateurs world billiards and snooker Championships, this victory brought him the first Professional Billiards world title.

Pankaj could not get past the quarter-finals in his earlier attempts in the championship. The last time the title came to India was in 2006 when Geet Sethi beat Mike Russell in the final.
