| Guangzhou (China): A 60-member Indian squad is all set to start its journey in the 18th Asian Athletics Championships, which commences here from tomorrow. However, the stars like long jumper Anju Bobby George and 1500m runner Sinimole Paulose will not be seen in action this year.
It can be recalled here that India went through a good run in the last edition of the Asian Athletics Championship in Amman, Jordan in 2007 to finish second behind China. Anju was a part of the Indian squad in the championship and won a silver medal for the country. But an injury during the Beijing Olympics forced her out of the field for quite some time. She didnt take part in a single event since then.
Sinimole Paulose, another star performer in the Amman event who won a gold in 1500m and a silver in 800m, will be out of action too this year. The more in the list of left-out are J J Sobha and Sushmita Singha Roy who earned silver and bronze medals respectively in the women's heptathlon in the last edition of the event in Amman in 2007.
Another top performer who will not be seen in action in this year is the woman athlete Preeja Sridharan. Preeja won silver medals in both 500m and 1000m in 2007. |
