New Delhi, April 23: The National Commission for Women (NCW) is facing a heavy backlog of complaints that were either not taken up or not disposed of, Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath said today.

"In the annual audit inspection of 2008-09, the issue of pendency (of complaints) has been pointed out in the National Commission for Women (NCW)," Tirath informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply.

"Efforts are made to settle and cut down the pendency by NCW," she added.

The minister, however, said that since the NCW is dependant on state governments, district administration, police officers and other government departments to hold meetings in matrimonial discord cases and domestic violence cases, and the coordination process take time, several cases were pending.
