New Delhi: The International Women's Day 2010 in India could be a big occasion as far as women's empowerment is concerned. The Indian government is ready to implement the bill that would ensure 33% reservation for women - it is expected that the bill would be passed in order to commemorate the day that celebrates womanhood. Crucially the statistics are in favor of the bill being passed.

However, there are a certain political parties who are opposed to the bill - Bahujan Samajwadi Party, Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal and Janata Dal (United). They are opposing the bill on the basis that there is not enough reservation for women from the Other Backward Classes.

However, the ruling coalition along with the BJP and the Left parties are sure to get this particular bill approved and are viewing it as a landmark of sorts. They are also ready to face the challenges to be mounted by the opponents of the bill. Sonia Gandhi, the chairman of the United Progressive Alliance is particularly keen that the bill is passed on the intended day itself.

Both Bharatiya Janata Party and Communist Party of India - Marxist have been in favor quick approval for the bill. Within the UPA Sonia Gandhi has got MPs going with an inspirational speech while dinners have been held to mobilise numbers for the bill to be passed. Manmohan Singh is also supposed to talk to SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav regarding the issue. (IANS)
