| Bhiwani (Haryana), July 3: Caste Council or Khap Panchayat have received much brickbats for their strict adherence to conservatism and inhuman ideologies pertaining to same-gotra (same caste) marriage.
Jat Mahasabha, the premier organization of Jats, has come up with another demand and this time they want marriageable age of girls to be lowered to 15. For the boys they want the marriageable age to be lowered to 17 respectively.
The prime reason behind such a proposition is to ensure that couples don't elope and marry against the wishes of their families.
While talking to the reporters, Om Prakash Mann, Haryana president of All India Jat Mahasabha, this issue will be discussed at a sarv khap panchayat on July 17 in Rohtak.
Refuting the claim that Khap panchayats had any role in honour killings he added that lowering the legal age of marriage will stop the couples from taking any drastic step like eloping, which brings shame to their families.
When asked about the impact of lowering marriageable age on academics he asserted that his main concern is about young people who are getting killed by their families.
The forthcoming panchayat will be attended by representatives of around 600 khaps of all castes and communities starting from Jats and Rajputs to Gujjars and Dhanaks. |
