| New Delhi, Aug 25: With Delhi all set to complete its 100 years of stint as the capital of India in 2011, the citizens of the country debate about the worthiness of the city as the national capital. In a #iVote question raised on Twitter on Should Mumbai be the capital of India? most of the Indians on this social networking site replied in favour of keeping Delhi as the Indian capital and blurted out the gripe they have about India's financial capital.
Among the early respondents were @chowdhurysamrat and @bhattacharyar who share the same opinion about lack of security in Mumbai. They attribute Delhi's safety to its inland location and consider it much safer than Mumbai, which is vulnerable to attacks via its coastal areas.
Bringing into notice the cultural differences between Delhi and Mumbai, @Seekamal voiced against the idea of making it the national capital as the city suffers from "poor infrastructure, too much regionalism". Even @laghus speaks the same language. According to him, "Mumbai shouldn't be India's capital 'cause it is overcrowded," He blamed city's "crumbling infrastructure and intolerant people" as impediments for Mumbai in its way of becoming the capital city.
Maharashtra's much talked about parties MNS and Shiv Sena have been cited as the reasons for the city's maligned image wiping off any possibility of becoming India's capital city. @Isshshsh believes Mumbai is capable of becoming India's capital "but unfortunately has a worthless political party called MNS, disrupting peace and unity." Her thought finds another advocator in other tweeples including @abhijitdg who said no to Mumbai as the possible Indian capital in future and the only reason he thought would suffice is, "If only for the presence of the Shiv Sena."
Taking a dig at the MNS and Shiv Sena regime in Maharashtra @princess_aanch says a vehement no to the idea of considering Mumbai as the capital city because "people like Raj Thackeray and Bala Saheb Thackeray OWN that city (Mumbai) and make it work as per their will".
The question of Mumbai having the probability of being the next Indian capital led @viveksingh to ask a question as to whether Raj Thackeray should be the next PM of the country.
Tweeples displayed concern about having too much on the same plate as both @soumik2471 and @Gagrin feel that "too much concentration in one city is not good" for India and there is no need to "overburden Mumbai." According to @ud_iitd, "let's not spoil Mumbai just like Delhi has got spoilt under the excuse of CWG!!"
Those who patronized the idea of making Mumbai the national capital counted on better work culture of the city, as @shweta21182 tweets, "It (Mumbai) has better work culture and a professional mindset. I find Mumbai and its people better suited 4 this!" Her words find echo in @samudranil_m's opinion - Mumbai has a better work ethic. Claiming that Mumbai is the heart of the nation, @priyankac19 tweets, "Bombay doesn't need a tag to prove it indeed is the heart of the nation."
A rather out of the box opinion came from @simarp who feels it is time we Indians learn to look beyond the six metros and shift the new capital "either near Bhopal or in the NorthEast of India." as the "Nation needs 2 move beyond 6 cities."
Looking at the votes received and opinions expressed, it becomes evident that people keep infrastructure, political stability and internal security as top priorities while gauging the worthiness of a capital city. |
